A Celebration of Giudeo-Romano Food and Music

Tuesday May 29th, 2007

“Vesti da turco e mangia da ebreo” is a well-known, ancient Italian phrase which advises to“dress like a Turk and eat like a Jew.” Classic Italian Jewish cooking brings out the unique and traditional foods of two old worlds combined, relying not on exotic ingredients but on the right proportions of foods of the highest quality.

Italy has one of the longest-standing Jewish populations. Perhaps for this reason, Jewish music has had some influence on Italian music through the centuries, both in melody and in subject matter. The evening boasts an incredible five course meal prepared by Chef Maurice and will be complimented with the music of Soprano, Belva Spiel.

Good cooking and music are both art forms and as such both require freedom and imagination in order to be expressed. Join us in our celebration at La Cucina.

Bio- Belva Spiel, Soprano

Originally from Winnipeg, Belva won a scholarship to the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto and later earned a music degree in voice performance at the University of Toronto.  She won several Canada Council grants as well as the Rose Bowl award at the Kiwanis Music Festival.  She was a finalist in the CBC Talent Festival and Montreal Symphony Orchestra Competition, among others. She pursed further studies at the Banff Centre, the Goldovsky Institute in West Virginia and at the American Institute of Musical Studies in Austria.  She sang with Canadian Opera and Manitoba Opera Companies, Opera in Concert, Toronto Opera Repetoire, The West German Radio Orchestra, CBC Radio and TV, several Canadian orchestras, The Baroque Cantata Soloists and the Pro Arte Trio, whose record “Fold Songs in Concert Form” is still available on Smithsonian “Folkways” Recordings.

Belva later became a lawyer but still sings on a free-lance basis.  For the past five years, Belva has led a chamber choir at her synagogue in Toronto.  She has also sung as a soloist with the Toronto Jewish Folk Choir, at the First Narayever Congregation and with the Spring Fling Jazz Trio.
